I don’t know why I waited until the *end* of summer to do this, but I finally bought an ice cream maker. I think it has something to do with my distain for kitchen unitaskers. So at least now I can enjoy delicious cold homemade ice cream all winter long. Starting with this.
-
I’m probably going to have to establish some house rule that requires 4 hours of gym time before any use of the ice cream maker is implemented.

I like to do a lot of small jars of different jams, condiments, etc. for holiday gifts. Last year I made apple butter, but I think would be a nice change and now is the time to make use of the billions of blueberries at the farmer’s market.
-
I pretty much just want to eat this straight from the pan with a giant spoon.
-
Slightly more exotic than the traditional McCormick’s spiced nut recipe I usually make…
- Lemon Vanilla Jam – Canning Across America There isn’t a thing about this that doesn’t sound delicious. (tags: gifts recipes)

I've never bought a cherry pitter because a) Alton Brown has trained me to possess an ingrained contempt for unitaskers, and b) I've never seen one for less than $12/pop, and the good ones seem to run closer to $25. That's just crazy talk, there. I like this version, which I can make from one of the myriad of unmatched thriftstore forks in the my utensil drawer for a cost of maybe $.25

I love this adaptation of one of my favorite summer recipes. The sweltering Baltimore heat has caused my squash plants to drop their blossoms (that sounds so dirty, but I don't mean it that way. Really-I don't.) But I will salvage what I can to make these.

It's too hot to bake bread. It's too hot to eat bread. It's too hot to do pretty much anything, except spend your lunch hour indoors, reading about baking bread on the internet in your Arcticly chilled office that you will NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT AGAIN.

My aunt is sending me a bunch of roving from her farm. I’m going to learn how to spin, damn it, if it’s the last thing I do.
-
I think this is the company I want to use to wash/card the fiber my aunt is sending me.
-
It always looks soooo simple when I see other people using drop spindles…but I’m thinking it’s probably not as easy as it looks.
-
I’m too impatient to wait for a spindle to arrive in the mail. Maybe I should just make my own…

If you haven't read any David Markson books, you should. Wittegenstein's Mistress is amazing, but The Last Novel is my personal favorite. I knew the film Dirty Dingus Magee before I knew Markson as an author. My friend Kevin, who is Very Very Smart About Books, introduced me to Markson about 6 years ago. I am glad he did. I am sad he is gone.

This is the recipe that's going to make me break down and buy an ice cream maker. Fun fact: in my family we only eat honey from my uncle's apiary in Alberta. I have 3 quarts of The Best Honey In The World in the cupboard right now. It's Mighty Peace Honey. Look for it if you're in Canada.

The lovely Sewing Goodness made me a GORGEOUS shrug made with some of this yarn a beeeeaaaauuuutifullllll coral/salmon yarn. And I heart it.
-
See, you don’t even need a sewing machine to help with the oilspill. Just get out your old t-shirts that were going to Goodwill anyway, and cut them into large rags. Ship ‘em off and help the dolphins and the turtles get cleaned up. Then shake your first and glower in the general direction of BP. Then get back to making more rags and send off another batch, because there’s a lot of oil and a lot of sad turtles.

I’m sorry, what? There’s an entire blog devoted to the art of cooking with a waffle iron and it took this long for me to find it? Obviously I need to spend more time on the internet. Also, I need to make me a waffle iron panini.

I hate store-bought bias tape with the passion of a 1000 suns. It doesn't look as hard to make as I'd thought.

I appreciate this for calling out the advertising industry's obsession about the relationship between yogurt and poop, because that's caused me start to get angry at yogurt when I see it.

Every year at Christmakuh I made jams, jellies, etc. for gift baskets. This is definitely going in the baskets this year.

My afternoon walking route takes me around the White House and around the South Lawn. I like to peek in and see if I can get a good view of the White House Garden. In my own (much, much less presidential) garden, my spinach is coming up fast. My favorite spinach dish is creamed spinach. This is the White House Chef's healthy recipe for the same.

Generally speaking, I’m not a “Wing-Girl.” But Mr. Begonia loves what he calls, “Wing-Gu.” (This might be an internet meme “thing” or it could be just one of those “words” he makes up periodically.) He likes the chicken shop near our house, but when it comes to making them himself—the perfect wing is his Rosebud. He’s tried many recipes, many variations. But, as far as I know, never one made with soda. I recall an aunt who used to prepare glazed ham by pouring Coke into a baking bag and this sounds similar. But I never ate the ham because ham is blechy. In addition to my distain for pork, I am one of those people who won’t eat meat on the bone. I don’t know if this would work the same way with boneless chicken breasts (either whole or tenderloin); it might not be as flavorful…but I’ll give it a try.

While I consider myself a dedicated fan, I’m not a Star Wars aficionado. However, I am married to one. And we both like cookies! What would make cookies even better? YODA. At first I thought the finishing detail might be daunting, but now I’m looking forward to it.

I want to eat these all day long. With poutine.

I’m book marking this for the cute idea, but also because I want that mug with the bird on it.

Mr. Begonia and I will be heading to Toronto in June for the NXNE festival. We <3 Canada. We do. What do we love about Canada? Oh, lots of stuff. And the food doesn’t hurt. Specifically: Tim Horton’s. I want to swim in the coffee and roll around in a bed of Timbits. More importantly: poutine. Here in the Northeast poutine is generally referred to as Disco Fries, and while excellent, they just aren’t poutine. Mostly this is because places here tend to use cheddar cheese, not cheese curds. I’ve only had “real” poutine once here, at the Victoria Gastropub in Columbia, MD. Anywho, cheese curds can be hard to come by in the states, but NOT impossible. Wegman’s has them, and a few of the local markets. So I am very, very excited to try this recipe for mushroom gravy poutine. (Bonus points for vegetarian option!) I need to practice eating it in advance of our big Toronto Adventure.

This, like the Tomato Soup cake, is one of those things that makes my husband look at me with great suspicion. I swear to Ceiling Cat I will not attempt to secretly feed him beet cake. But I would like to make this for my friend Kevin. Because he likes beets. I only recently learned that I like beets. But I still don’t like brussel sprouts.
