Okay, why are we not together? I can spin like I was born in 3100 BC! I have taught an entire slightly reluctant upper-level history class to spin! I will teach you to spin!

I adore this top! It is the most flattering color! Also, I really like stockinette, so we should come up with some arrangement whre you do the hard lacey stuff and I take over the stockinette. Also, is that corn in your garden?

In hindsight, that's exactly what I should have done. I remember reading a Yarn Harlot post about felting 10 pairs at once in a bathtub with a plunger. I'll try that with the next pair. The yarn on the new pair is less of a wild-card and I've felted with it before, so I (sort of) know what to expect. I know using the washer is wasteful in terms of water, too, and I'm sure the bathroom sink would be more eco-friendly.

Good idea about the gloves, though. The conservators at the museum where I work use nitrile gloves that don't have that latex-y smell. I might snag a pair and see if that helps.

Have you considered felting by hand? That's how I do most of mine--small projects in the bathroom sink, big ones in the bathtub. You can use a plunger or something for agitation, but I like to just use my hands (or feet, for the bathtub-sized projects). It takes some serious elbow grease, but you get a lot more control over the final result. Like you, I'm high strung, and control is good.

(Well, also, I don't have a washing machine, and no way I'm going to try felting in the laundromat.)

You might want to invest in a pair of rubber gloves, though, if you have sensitive skin. Hand-felting is . . . let's call it exfoliating. (I don't use gloves, 'cause they make the final product smell of latex, and I figure my hands take enough abuse, what's one more thing?)
